Hypereading FAQ

Q. 10,000 words-per-minute? Aren't you exaggerating?
Well, This method actually allows you to read at speeds up to 500,000 words-per-minute or even more under ideal conditions. We think 10,000 wpm is rather conservative.

Q. How is this possible?
In the same way you can look at a tree and recognize it is a tree, without looking at each leaf. Our minds are capable of taking in whole pages of words at once. It is easy to do after practicing for a while.

Q. Ah-ha! The catch! How much practicing does this take?
We are teaching you how to read differently. This is a new method for you. Yes, it will require practice. You have been reading one-word-at-a-time now for many years. This is not an instant change, but rather a learning experience for you.
The biggest issue to overcome is falling back into the habit reading each word, one word at a time.

Q. OK, how long does all this take?
The length of time varies with the individual. We provide four training sessions of about 90 minutes each. We ask the student to spend 30-45 minutes each day practicing (in other words, homework). At the end of the four training sessions s/he should be able to read using this method, but recall will still be limited. Practice (using this method) will improve recall of the materials read.

Q. Will I be able to understand what I've read?
Typically YES. Our method does not directly affect comprehension.

Q. What can I expect for comprehension?
With practice, you can expect the same level of comprehension as if you read the old-fashioned way.

Q. Can my comprehension be improved?
Yes. But this reading program does not directly address improvement in comprehension.

Q. How can I improve my reading comprehension?
There are two things you can do to improve your comprehension with any reading method. One of them is reading a dictionary or two. In this way you can learn more words and their meanings.

Q. What is the other way?
Reading lots of books. By reading more, you will be exposed to more word usages and more contexts for the words.

Q. Reading a dictionary?
YES. Remember, you are hypereading. Reading a 1000 page dictionary will only take about 10 minutes. In fact, you could go to your nearby library and read an entire encyclopedia set in a single afternoon.

Q. The library?
Sure. Imagine spending an evening or two and devouring all of the books in the gardening or computer section.

Q. What about a bookstore?
Why not? Many bookstores allow you to glance at their books. Of course, you can glance at a book for about 10 minutes using our method and retain as much as if you had sat there for 16 or more hours reading.

Q. I'm interested. What is the process?
You begin by making an appointment.  The first session may be a group session.  We provide group sessions which explain more details about how our mind works.  The actual training classes have a student:teacher ratio of 10:1 or less.

A note to parents
It is common for a parent to want to see immediate results. Parents will often hand a child a book and ask that it be hyperead, then the parent asks questions. Hypereading does not readily lend itself to such demonstrations. If immediate demonstrations are necessary, then the parent should look to another method. Hypereading is not for instant responses. Even after a great deal of practice, the student should allow their mind to absorb and digest the material before attempting any recall.
